How do I switch from POP to IMAP in Outlook Express?

Applies to: Grid System

These instructions are for switching Outlook Express from a Pop3 Account to IMAP. If you are not sure what kind of account you want, please see this FAQ first.

Part I - Create a new IMAP account

  1. Click 'Tools' then 'Accounts'.
  2. Click 'Add' and select 'Mail...'.
  3. Enter your name in the 'Display name' then click the 'Next' button.
  4. Enter your email address then click the 'Next' button.
  5. Select 'IMAP' from the dropdown box then enter the following information (then click 'Next'):
    Incoming Mail server:
Outgoing Mail server: Use your ISP's outgoing mail server
  6. Enter your mailbox username & password into the boxes 'Account Name' and 'Password' respectively, then click 'Next' then 'Finish'.
  7. Click 'Yes' on the dialog box "Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added?", then click 'Ok'.

Part II - Disable the old pop account

  1. Click 'Tools' then 'Accounts'.
  2. Highlight the original/old account name then click 'Properties'
  3. On the 'General' tab, UN-check the box 'Include this account when receiving or synchronizing' then click 'Ok.

Now, your old POP email will be located under Local Folders and your new IMAP account will display it's own set of folders within Outlook Express containing any 'new' email.
