Domain Names

ID #356

Why don't the serial numbers match on the nameservers for my domain?

Applies to: Grid System

SOA Serial Numbers are used by DNS servers running software called "BIND" to check one another's status and see if they have the same copy of the zone. Our authoritative DNS infrastructure uses different software (PowerDNS) with immediate and automatic replication. The reason one nameserver generates a 0 and the other generates a number is we run different software versions which have different behavior. The number isn't meaningful in either case and the discrepancy doesn't indicate a problem.
