How do I upgrade my Hosting Environment?
On the Modwest Grid Hosting platform, we give our customers the ability to control the hosting environment being used by their account. Specifically, the operating system and version of PHP being utilized by your account. When a new account is created the most recent available hosting environment is automatically selected, however, if you have been hosting with Modwest for more than a year or two, an environment upgrade is usually due. Using the more recent available hosting environment can help protect your website against hacking attempts, and improve the overall performance of web-applications hosted at Modwest. This is a free service.
You can view the currently available environments and initiate this change using the 'Change Hosting Environment' page, available in Onsite when logged in as the administrator for your account, here.
Since the Modwest Grid is a dynamically load-balanced system: this change must be propagated throughout our cluster of webservers. This process can take up to 90 minutes on an active account, and during this transition you may receive unexpected responses such as failed database connections, or PHP configuration issues. The best way to prevent this behavior is to schedule the change outside of peak activity hours for your account, and to wait for at least 30 minutes after initiating the environment switch - before attempting to access your account or make any additional changes.
Once the transition is complete, it is important to verify your existing PHP configuration: as many of the package names and paths may have changed between hosting environments. If you have not previously made custom changes to the /conf/php.ini file within your account: you may want to start by resetting your account to its default PHP configuration using the PHP configuration tool, found in Onsite here.
If you don't feel comfortable making these changes, and would like Modwest Support Staff to make them on your behalf, please contact us via the Support Form
