I am having trouble installing phpBB2

Applies to: Grid System

To install the phpBB forum follow these steps:

First find the most current version of phpBB at http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php. Replace the URL and the filename of the tar.gz archive in the next step with the correct URL and correct filename of the current version that you find at the phpBB download site.

Now, at a shell prompt on the server, execute these 3 commands. They should be typed one command per line, hitting the ENTER key after typing each line:

cd /htdocs/www
wget http://download-site/phpBB-xxx.tar.gz
tar -xvzf phpBB-xxx.tar.gz

DO NOT change the permissions on config.php to be writeable by all, as you are told to do by the phpBB documentation. We do not allow execution of scripts that are world writable. Any file owned by your user that is writable by your user is already writable by your php scripts as explained here.

Go to http://www.yourdomain.com/phpBB2/install/install.php with your browser to complete the web-based portion of the installation.

After you are sure that the package is installed correctly, make the entire install/ and contrib/ directories unaccessable by a browser by typing this at the shell prompt:

mv /htdocs/www/phpBB2/install /htdocs/www/phpBB2/contrib /tmp

The above should be typed all on one single line, even though it may wrap to 2 lines in your browser.

Now when you go to http://www.yourdomain.com/phpBB2/ you should be able to finish configuring phpBB by logging in as the admin user you specified.
