Why do I get error "blocking call cancelled" with FTP?

Applies to: Grid System, Managed Servers, VPS

This can happen when you are behind a firewall or are running a personal firewall like Black Ice Defender or ZoneAlarm.

To fix this, go into your FTP program settings and find the setting for "Passive Mode" or "PASV Mode". If it is turned on, turn it off. If it is off, turn it on.

I was having the same problem. Try changing the Passive Transfer checkbox on the advanced tab of the connection. If it's checked, uncheck it and vice versa. It worked for me.

If you are using Windows command line ftp, there is no PASV or Passive command. However, you can send arbitrary commands to the server by using the 'literal' command.

In my experiments, a unix/linux server would respond favorably to a 'PASV ON" command (preceded by the 'literal' command). A Microsoft FTP server didn't like the extra argument, but was happy with simply 'PASV'.

e.g.,

ftp> literal PASV
